Comparison

The WeTransfer alternative built for wedding films

WeTransfer moves files, and it has quietly got better at it — previews in the browser, branded pages, links that can be set to never expire. A wedding film still deserves a premiere. Here is the honest comparison between sending a transfer link and delivering a private, cinematic gallery your couples keep coming back to.

Where WeTransfer falls short for wedding delivery

WeTransfer was built to move big files between professionals, and it is genuinely good at that. It has also been narrowing rather than widening: Reviews and Portals — the branded client workspace some studios delivered from — were retired after December 22, 2025. As a delivery experience for the biggest film of a couple’s life, it works against you in four ways.

  • A link that outlives the wedding is a paid-tier feature. As of August 2026, Free and Starter transfers are capped at 3 days. Credit where it is due — on Ultimate and above you can pick any expiry date, including never, and the link stays live until you delete it. But that is a file waiting at a URL, not a home the couple comes back to on their first anniversary.
  • Preview is real, but it stops well short of a wedding film. WeTransfer plays MP4 and MOV in the browser up to 300 MB per file, at a deliberately lower resolution for streaming speed — the original is what you download. A 4K wedding film passes 300 MB in its first minute, so parents and friends get a download, a codec and some patience instead of a stream.
  • A branded download page is not a premiere. Ultimate does buy you a custom subdomain, your logo, rotating wallpapers and a background and description per transfer — that is more than nothing. What it does not buy is somewhere to watch. The couple still ends up with a file in a Downloads folder, opened once on a laptop.
  • Half the wedding still lives somewhere else. Albums added link-shared photo and video collections that anyone can view without an account, and transfer previews let viewers favorite files and leave comments — closer than it was. But an Album is a shared upload space with an expiry date, not a client gallery: we don’t find an album-pick workflow documented on their site, and there is no gallery your studio can extend and earn from, and no portfolio that fills itself every time you publish.

When WeTransfer is still the right tool

Sending raw footage to a second editor, moving selects to a retoucher, getting a rough cut to a planner — for working-file logistics between professionals, a transfer link is exactly right, the in-browser preview genuinely helps, and the entry tier costs nothing. We still use it for that ourselves.

The line is simple: use a transfer tool for work in progress, and a delivery platform for the finished wedding. One moves bytes; the other is the moment your couple has been waiting months for.

Common questions

WeTransfer can make links that never expire — why pay for a gallery?

Because a permanent link is still a download page. Knotflix gives the couple a private page that streams the film in 4K with their photos underneath, no account and no download required — and every gallery includes 90 days of hosting couples can extend themselves.

Can couples still download their films from Knotflix?

Yes — the film downloads from the gallery, and photos come down at full resolution, individually or as ZIPs. The studio’s original master files stay downloadable too. Streaming is how they watch; downloads are how they archive.

What happens when the included hosting ends?

Every gallery includes 90 days. Couples can extend whenever they want more time, and half of every extension is paid out to the studio — the long tail becomes revenue instead of a hosting bill.
