How print sales work

Every gallery you publish includes a print store. Couples order prints, canvas, acrylic and metal straight from the gallery, a lab prints and ships them, and half the profit is paid to your studio. There is nothing to switch on — but there is one thing to set up, and it is worth doing before your first sale.

What your couples can order

Anything in the gallery. A couple opens a photo, taps Print, chooses a size, frames the crop against the real proportions of that print, then picks a finish and adds it to the cart.

  • Photo print — a silver-halide lab print, the classic photographic finish.
  • Canvas — stretched and ready to hang, with the image wrapped around the edge.
  • Acrylic — glossy, with real depth to it.
  • Metal — aluminium, modern, and very hard to damage.
  • Sizes from 4×6 up to 20×30 and beyond; the common ones are listed first.

What you earn, and on what

The lab charges a wholesale cost, the couple pays retail, and the difference is split in half: half to your studio, half to Knotflix. Roughly, that is $8 on a photo print, $25 on a canvas, $42 on a metal print and $44 on an acrylic.

It is half the profit, not half the sale. On a $143 order your share is about $43, because the lab still has to be paid. Shipping is quoted live from the lab and passed through at exactly that cost — it is never marked up, and no one earns anything on it.

Knotflix settles with the lab and absorbs the card processing fee out of its half, so the platform’s half is gross where yours is exact. When the split lands on an odd cent, the cent goes to your studio.

Connect payouts first — this is the one that catches people

Your share only reaches you once your studio has a connected Stripe payout account. Until then, print sales settle to Knotflix, and the split is not applied retroactively — the same rule that governs hosting extensions.

Open Studio → Settings → Payouts and click Connect with Stripe. Only the studio owner can do this. It is a few minutes of business details, an identity check and the bank account you want paid, and the same account then receives both your hosting share and your print share.

If Stripe later asks for a verification document, the Payouts tab shows what is outstanding. Handle it promptly — Stripe pauses payouts until you do.

What happens after an order

Nothing that requires you. The order goes to the lab with the couple’s crop already applied, and it is printed and shipped directly to them.

  • The couple gets an order confirmation as soon as their card clears.
  • They get a second email with tracking when the lab ships it.
  • Your studio gets an email naming what sold, the order total, and your share of it.

What you cannot change (yet)

You do not choose the products or set the prices — Knotflix maintains the catalogue centrally, which is why there is nothing for you to configure and why a gallery you delivered months ago can still sell a print today.

The flip side is real: you cannot mark a canvas up for your market, and you cannot hide a size you would rather not sell. If pricing your own products is central to how you sell, a dedicated print storefront will still serve you better than this does.

Common questions

Do I need to switch the print store on?

No. It is in every published gallery already, including ones you delivered before prints existed.

I sold a print but saw no money. Why?

Almost certainly because payouts are not connected yet — until they are, print sales settle to Knotflix and the split is not backdated. Check Studio → Settings → Payouts.

Can couples order from an expired gallery?

No. Once a gallery’s hosting has lapsed the couple cannot open it, so there is nothing to order from. It is another quiet reason extensions are worth encouraging.

What if something arrives damaged or wrong?

Email us and we will arrange a replacement with the lab. You do not have to run support for a product you never handled.

Does this affect my subscription price?

No. Print sales are separate from your plan — nothing about selling prints changes what you pay for Knotflix.
