Watching your wedding on an Apple TV

Your gallery can open on a television as well as a phone, so the film plays properly when the family comes over. It takes about thirty seconds and you only do it once.

What you need

An Apple TV — the small black box that plugs into the television, not a Samsung or LG set with apps built in — and the link to your own gallery, the one your photographer or videographer sent you.

  • The Knotflix app, installed on the Apple TV from the App Store.
  • Your gallery link, open on your phone.
  • Both on any internet connection — they do not have to be the same one.

Pairing it, the quick way

Open the Knotflix app on the Apple TV. It shows a large QR code with a short code underneath.

Now open your gallery on your phone and tap the television icon near the top right — labelled “Watch on TV”. Your camera opens. Point it at the code on the television and hold still for a second.

That is the whole thing. The television will load your wedding within a second or two, and your phone can go back in your pocket.

If the camera will not cooperate

Some phones refuse camera access in a browser, and some living rooms are too dark to focus in. There is a typed route that always works.

Look at the short code under the QR on the television — eight characters in two halves, something like KNOT-9F2A. On a phone, tablet or laptop, go to knotflix.com/tv and enter it. Same result, no camera involved.

Codes are only good for ten minutes, so if the television has been sitting on the screen a while it will have replaced the code with a fresh one. Use whatever is on screen now, not one you wrote down earlier.

What you can do once it is on

Your featured film plays quietly behind the menu, and your collections sit in a row along the bottom — the highlight film, the full ceremony, the photographs, whatever your studio delivered.

Photographs open as a grid you can move through with the remote, or you can start a slideshow and leave it running. A collection that holds only one film just plays it rather than making you open a folder first. Your cover photograph also appears on the Apple TV home screen above the Knotflix icon, so the wedding is there before you even open the app.

Disconnecting, and other televisions

A television stays connected until you disconnect it, so you do not re-pair every time. If you paired one you should not have — a rental, a relative’s, an Airbnb — open the app on that television and disconnect. That removes your gallery from it along with any images it had saved.

A television is connected to one gallery at a time. To use a different television, pair that one the same way.

Common questions

Do I need a Knotflix account or password?

No. Knotflix has no accounts for couples anywhere, including on the television. Scanning the code is what connects it, and that is the only step.

Does it cost anything?

No. The app is free and pairing is free. Your studio’s subscription covers it, and your gallery works on the television for as long as it works anywhere.

Can my parents pair their own Apple TV to our gallery?

Yes — anyone you would happily forward the gallery link to can pair a television with the same code, since the code grants exactly what the link does. Treat it the way you treat the link itself.

Will it work on our Samsung TV / Roku / Fire Stick?

A Knotflix channel for Roku is on the way. On a Samsung, a Fire Stick or any other television you can open your gallery link in the television’s web browser if it has one, or watch from a phone or laptop as usual.

We are getting the wrong wedding, or nothing at all.

Disconnect inside the app and pair again using the code currently on screen — codes expire after ten minutes. If it still will not load, your gallery’s hosting may have lapsed; your studio can tell you, and extending it brings the television back with everything else.
